on returning

  • Dec. 8th, 2009 at 10:39 PM
in two weeks' time, i will be heading back to Singapore. this semester is marked by two major events - interning in a church and the passing of my grandma. both had a significant impact on me, to the degree that i can sense the shift within myself, which is probably the reason behind my feeling of being disconnected.

my return will also be the first time i will experience the reality of the loss of my grandma. while here in Berkeley, i am disconnected from the reality of my loss - her absence is almost the same as the absence of some friends with whom i have not been able to keep in touch with since August.

i will be taken a trip with my family to Taiwan - the first in 20 years. it is a trip i look forward to - it is a trip i take in remembrance of my grandma, and also a trip giving thanks to my mom who have sacrificed a lot to take care of my grandma.

as we remember those who passed on, we need to treasure those who are still with us.

I've thought to
cut off all contacts, give myself
a chance to fall out of love.

But the mere thought
of not being able to say
hello to you
is far more dreadful
than anything
I can contemplate.

Stones from Santorini

  • Dec. 8th, 2009 at 7:49 PM
I know Nature Boy for a few years now and when I was at Santorini, Greece in May 2008, a year and a half ago, I thought of him and picked two stones from the active volcano for him. The stones are unique in the world because firstly, the active volcano helps scientists learn about land formation and secondly, the mineral composition of the stones cannot be found anywhere else in the world--if you do a chemical test on the stones, you'll know immediately that they are from Santorini--and lastly, legend has it that the active volcano erupted and sank the mythic, utopian city of Atlantis where either side of the mouth of the river leading to the city was guarded by the Pillars of Hercules like, I'd imagine, the movie Lord of the Rings when the fellowship flows down the river.

The stones flew with me from Santorini to mainland Greece, Athens, back to New York and from New York, transiting at Frankfurt, to Singapore. I kept the stones with my notes, my literature notes.

Today, I wanted to exhume the stones, dig them up to finally give them to him. Such a long journey they have been. But I cannot find them, I cannot find them. I remember just seeing them the other day as I was looking through my notes. My parents, who like to meddle with my room despite my countless telling them not to, have a knack of destroying the most important things in my life, even indestructible things as stones. So I'm left with words to praise and exalt them, words as eternal as stones.

This is Santorini:

And across Santorini is the volcano where I plucked the stones from:

I was walking down Ubi Avenue last Saturday after 6pm. It had been raining hard for most of the day. The pavement was wet, and part of the grass verge was still flooded. Most of the shops were already closed, or closing up. The sky was grey, and the sun seemed to have disappeared. It hit me then, just like having a volleyball thrown hard, very hard, directly onto my chest. I lost the air in my lungs. I was stopped in my truck. The tears just came and couldn't stop.

I didn't cry that night we parted. Not even when I was sitting in the taxi, looking backward at your face becoming smaller as the distance opened up between us, waving farewell at you waving at me. Only my eyes felt gritty, as if I had been awake too long.

When the taxi came, I gave you a hug and you kissed me on my cheek. I could hear the "mwah" of the air coming out between your lips. I wanted to sink my face into the crook between your neck and your shoulder. I wanted to hold you tight, tighter. I knew I had to let go.

You offered to call me a taxi. You still have a conference call to make with your counterpart in US. It was getting late here, but they'd just be starting the day there. "The taxi will take a while, we have about 7 minutes", you said. "Let's sit here and wait". So we sat. I looked at the heading on the agenda you have on the table for your stay here. I looked at the jade laughing buddha atop the cabinet. I looked through the half-opened french door at the orchids on the balcony. I looked at the shape of your head, the waves of your hair, the curve of your hairline, your brows, your nose, your lips. "Let me look at you," I said, looking into your eyes. The words "one last time" not articulated. The silence grew but was not uncomfortable. You narrowed your eyes a little, looking back at me, your expression exactly the same as the day I first met you.

We talked. O how we talked that night.

must see temples (part 2 - Ta Keo)

  • Dec. 8th, 2009 at 5:31 PM

2. TA KEO

Ta Keo

an angkor style temple, i love ta keo because it reminded me of the mayan temples that i see on TV. i haven't been to any of the mayan or incan temples in south/central america.. but it somewhat looked like them.

climbing it is a must. the view from the top is great. though i would say, this is probably the toughest temple to climb.

Ta Keo

it's about three levels, with stairs as steep as this:

Ta Keo

Ta Keo

i love how the boulders form shadows when hit by afternoon sun

must see temples (part 1 - BENG MEALEA)

  • Dec. 8th, 2009 at 5:14 PM

during my 3 day trip in siem reap, i was able to see, probably 80% of the temples in the archaeological park. sometimes we skipped lunch, then once we paid extra to the guard to be able to get in since one of them closes early. also, the weather was perfect, it was cold in the morning, it was hot in the afternoon, but not as humid and as hot when you travel during summer months. i heard august is the worst. so i suggest, when traveling to siem, best to go between the months of november-march.

so if you're not the super temple person and if you would just want to see the best ones, here are my temple favorites:

1. BENG MEALEA

Beng Mealea

beng mealea is about 77 kms north of the archaeological park. it's not a popular tourist spot since it's bit far, but all of us agreed that no trip to siem reap is complete without visiting this temple.

Beng Mealea

you can't even enter through the gate because it's in shambles. good thing the locals made this wooden planks for you to use to get in the temple.

Beng Mealea

once you enter the temple, you'll just be in awe with the sights. i kept on taking pictures, but the photos just can't give justice to what you'll see in there. magnificent!

Beng Mealea

you can climb at your own risk, but there are locals to guide you. just pay them about $2 at the end of your exploration.

Beng Mealea

when in beng mealea, look for the apsara dancer cupping her boob. it's the only one in the whole of angkor. conservative ata dito.

buyer's remorse

  • Dec. 7th, 2009 at 10:01 PM
it felt good in my hands, and when i took the first couple of shots, my buyer's remorse faded away.

i didn't make the wrong decision - i wrestled the whole semester about getting the e30, and finally just took the plunge.

NB: Even if I'm not your type or you're not mine, I believe we can still be friends.

If you are looking to connect for a relationship, do read on.

I'd like you to be (not in any particular order)
1) Caucasian.
2) Taller than I am. Good if you're fair and trim.
3) Kind and considerate towards others.
4) Comfortable being gay. Will be best if you're completely out.
5) Enjoy your works. If you travel a lot that's fine as I can use the time you're away for my volunteer activities. Also I think traveling a lot is glamorous though I can imagine it's probably tedious if you do it for works too often.
6) HIV+ or HIV- doesn't matter, but if you're HIV+, I'd like you to be +ve about it and treat it with a little humor (black humor is fine). This is the least of my concerns doing what I do at Actions for Aids and Oogachaga.
7) Sexually experienced. I'm not so experienced so it'd be good if you are.
8) Not too much younger than I am. This is a big hang-up for me. I used to think the guy must be older than I am. I think I can now take a few years younger.

What can I offer?

1) In the interest of full disclosure, I have issue with self-confidence and body image. I'm also still getting over a guy I fall in love with.
2) I work as a Workplace Safety and Health Officer on construction sites. I've to take charge at work, so tend to be rather laid back in my personal life.
3) I volunteer a lot which to many guys is admirable but only from a distance.
4) I communicate better in writing than in speech.
5) I'm open-minded. I'm willing to learn. I will like to try anything at least once.
6) I believe in free will and will not demand that you're faithful to me as long as you play safe. I think I can be faithful but I don't really know since I'd never been in a proper relationship.
7) I'm HIV-/std-free as of last test (Nov 2009).

Epigraph: Eve Sedgwick's Feeling Touching

  • Dec. 8th, 2009 at 5:37 AM
This will be the epigraph of my book:

"Hope, often a fracturing, even a traumatic thing to experience, is among the energies by which the reparatively positioned reader tries to organize the fragments and part-objects she encounters or creates. Because the reader has room to realize that the future may be different from the present, it is also possible for her to entertain such profoundly painful, profoundly relieving, ethically crucial possibilities as that the past, in turn, could have happened differently from the way it actually did."

- Eve Sedgwick, Touching Feeling, p. 146.
