They should know better: The SPH NKF debacle

What I don't understand is why NKF didn't see it coming, or at least, expect that in suing SPH, they too will be subjected to the same amount of legal scrutiny that characterizes courtroom mudslinging. I suspect that this 600K salary expose is just the tip of the NKF iceburg that threatened to melt under the present media attention, thus the unceremonious withdrawal of the lawsuit.

Granted that all the SPH allegations about golden taps and first class plane tickets were not true, filing a lawsuit is certainly not the best recourse for an organization that is supposedly founded on the ideals of charity and compassion. A public denial would have sufficed. Efforts to dispute such a damaging allegation could have re-assured an already suspicious public. Nonetheless, the public still gave generously in subsequent fund raisers. I have no idea whether the amounts raised in subsequent events were affected by the allegations but I'm sure the money raised was no small amount. They should have already seen this is as a sign that the donating public is giving them the benefit of the doubt. They even started holding cancer fund drives, which I mentioned in an earlier entry, casts an even darker shadow over the organization's humanitarian intentions. In essense, the public may be willing to forgive the gold taps as long as a large bulk of the money still service the marginalized sector.

It would be argued that the lawsuit was intended to salvage the tarnished reputation of NKF. Maybe they hoped that by clearing the name of NKF, it would encourage more people to donate money or even coax people who have stopped donating to start doing so anew. This is well and good, as long as the organization is indeed free from anomalous undertakings and shady management policies. But one should know better if the opposite is true. If you have a can of worms hidden away, there is no need to holler for attention. They should have quitely dropped the lawsuit when people were more interested with banning gay parties or the IOC. Prudence, is oftentimes less costly than than the need for profit.

I think they are jsut too complacent. After all, when they threatened to sue the first 2 fellows, they immediately apologized. I guess they never expected tat SPH will go all the way to deal with him, esp since he has the support from Mrs GOh and some other MPs.

Shortsightedness or narrowmindedness in NKF's part.
or in other words they are just to stupid to see it coming.

Oh sorry, not tonight. It is tomorrow night. But I guess the rich and those people "behind the scene" will make sure the money still pour in. Don't want to lose face lah.

Lose face or whatever, I'm sure this negative publicity will adversely affect donations. Quite a number of people have told me (dr S included) that they were withdraw even giro contributions. Frankly, I don't know how NKF can recover from this. They probably would have to change name.

I stopped give them money since two years ago. Change name? The most they will take a two or three years "break", then start all over again.

still. i don't see how they can recover from this, unless they revamp the entire board. people will still view NKF with contempt.

hey, you still haven't told me the juicy reason why they are now holding a cancer show. hope to bump into you in the gym soon so we can gossip :) will be at gym tomorrow. :)

Man are forgetful... or at least Singaporeans are. In no time... few years down the road, the donations will come pouring again.

With the latest developemnt, reckon the 2 poor fellows unapproporiately charged years ago may have a recouse against NKF.

Its just all a matter of PR, I think. Getting the right celebrity to start campaigning for NKF etc.

But still, NKF will need a lot of brainwashing before the sour taste is washed away from our collective mouths.
