Discourse is inevitably confrontational. The bitter fruit of free speech is a third degree ego bruise.
So while I agree that Wee Shun Min was a tad insensitive (take it as a political correct adjective for arrogance) to the plight of the un-elite with her "please, get out of my elite uncaring face" rant, she is entitled to her opinion as much as the "leech" guy who lamented about his uncertain future. Ego bruises for everyone but ain't we having fun flaming each other? In the marketplace of ideas, the only loser is the poor sport who can't see anything beyond his small mindedness. We can take sides according to our own biases and inclinations but we are always the wiser after hearing both sides of the argument.
Wiser meaning we are given a front row seat on how people form ideas, no matter how biased and insensitive they come out. Because of free speech, we discover how an 18 year old "elitist" (What's with this obsession with elitism anyway?) views the world - populated by whiners and non-whiners. Because of free speech (or for some people, 2 apologies), we uncover how some people really view their role in society. Ain't free speech so illuminating?
Free speech is so much fun. We should have more of it.
